Google Gemini adds Temporary Chats and enhanced personalization features in latest app update

Google Gemini Introduces Temporary Chats and Enhanced Privacy Controls for Smarter, Safer AI Conversations

Google’s Gemini AI app continues evolving with the launch of innovative features aimed at giving users more control, privacy, and personalization in their AI interactions. The newest additions, Temporary Chats and revamped privacy controls, let users enjoy highly personalized conversations while protecting sensitive data and maintaining privacy.

Temporary Chats: Your Incognito Mode for AI Conversations

Launching from August 2025 and rolling out globally in the coming weeks, Gemini’s Temporary Chat feature offers a fresh way to engage with the AI for quick, one-off conversations without leaving a trace. Think of it as an incognito mode for your chatbot sessions: these chats:

  • Are not saved to your chat history or recent chats list

  • Do not influence Gemini’s memory or personalize future conversations

  • Will not be used to train or improve Google’s AI models

  • Are stored temporarily for up to 72 hours solely to process your request and any feedback

This new mode is perfect for private queries, brainstorming new ideas, or exploring topics that you prefer not to be retained. To start a Temporary Chat, users simply select the “Temporary Chat” icon next to “New Chat”—a simple toggle to keep conversations ephemeral.

Personal Context: Smarter AI That Remembers What Matters

Gemini now also features Personal Context, an advancement that allows the AI to remember key details from your past chats to offer more relevant, tailored responses. Enabled by default but optional, this feature helps save time by avoiding repeated explanations. For example, Gemini can recall personal preferences, past projects, or specific details like favorite recipes or pet names, making interactions flow naturally.

Users who prefer not to have their data remembered can easily disable this option in the app settings, balancing convenience with privacy preferences.

Updated Data and Privacy Settings for Greater Transparency

In line with Google’s commitment to user trust, Gemini introduces renamed and enhanced data management settings:

  • “Gemini Apps Activity” is now “Keep Activity”, which when enabled, allows a sample of uploads—such as files and photos—to be used for improving Google services.

  • Users can toggle this feature on or off anytime. If off, their data is excluded from AI training and improvements.

  • New controls also apply to audio, video, and screen shares shared with Gemini, defaulting to off, with the option to enable.

  • A dedicated Gemini Apps Privacy Hub provides comprehensive access to privacy tools and policy information.

These settings empower users with transparency and control over how their data is collected and utilized.

AI Tools and Technologies Powering Gemini’s New Features

  • Advanced Memory Models: Leveraging machine learning to safely remember and personalize interactions.

  • Privacy-focused Design: Temporary Chat ensures confidential conversations without long-term data retention.

  • Data Control Frameworks: User-centric toggles that govern what inputs contribute to model training.

  • Real-time Feedback Processing: Temporary Chats retain data only briefly to enhance interaction quality without privacy trade-offs.

Visualizing Gemini’s Future: Recommended AI Tools

For crafting visual concepts inspired by these breakthroughs, here are some powerful generative tools:

  • MidJourney and DALL·E: Create futuristic AI assistant and chat interface illustrations.

  • Unreal Engine and Nvidia Omniverse: Develop immersive 3D simulations showcasing Gemini’s smart chat features.
